Hatha Yoga is a system of yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a yogic sage, in the fifteenth century. “Hatha” is a composite of two Sanskrit words, “Ha” meaning Sun and “Tha” meaning Moon. “Yoga” is often translated as Union, therefore “Hatha Yoga” is the Union of Sun (masculine, dynamic) and Moon (feminine, receptive), or the balance of opposites. In Hatha Yoga we find this harmony or health within the body and mind through asana (postures), pranyama (breathing exersises) and meditation, among other mental and spiritual disiplines. “Hatha”as one word translates as forciful, which refers to the use of many postures, progressively more difficult and the fact that Hatha yoga is one of only a handful of yogic traditions that uses asana in the pursuit of this equilibrium.
