Neasa teaches in the Hatha style and true to tradition, each class begins with pranyama (breathing exercises) and ends with meditation. Neasa likes to teach in a grounding way, encouraging awareness and understanding of the body and awareness of the breath. Yoga is primarily about finding harmony in the body and mind and in Neasa’s classes a beginner student should find the emphasis is on building up core strength and bringing the skeleton back into alignment. Core strength refers to the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Strengthening these muscles provides support for the entire body, particularly the back, helping to minimise injury, improve posture and the function of the body as a whole. At the same time a beginner will be learning how to combine that strength with a sense of ease, to find fluidity in the postures and calm in the mind. We do this by learning how to utilise the breath, focus the mind and listen to the body. As a student progresses onto continuation yoga classes, they can begin, with the support of their increased strength to work on deeper flexibility. When the postures become more familiar a student can begin to build on the meditative aspect of yoga and become more attuned to their emotional and physical wellbeing. The classes are progressive, encouraging students to build on their practice, finding deeper strength and openness in the body and mind.
